Floating Communities
>> An AUTARCHIC – MOBILE –FLOATING HOME
By: Leonard Henny | 2008/11/10 | Destination: Europe’s Waterways
Nomads of the 21st. Century
There is a new breed of “foot-loose” young professionals who can live of their laptop-work wherever their whims will take them. They are designers, ICTspecialists, consultants and many others who don’t need a fixed place as a residence, and are eager to work under the circumstances of a permanent vacation.
For them we have created a housing solution which gives them shelter with modern comfort thanks to the application of state-of-the-art ecological technologies.

>> 10 Floathomes in Holland launched despite a force 9 storm.
By: Leonard Henny | 2008/03/16 | Destination: Terwijde, Leidsche Rijn, Utrecht, the Netherlands
10 new Floathomes were launched on February 29 2008 at Terwijde near Utrecht in the centre of the Netherlands. The 10 Floathomes were transported from the factory ABC Floathome Construction Ltd. in Urk, in the province of Friesland in the North of Holland. For the first leg of their journey, from Friesland to the outskirts of Utrecht, a tug towed the Floathomes 120km over water. But once near their mooring site the Floathomes had to travel overland to their final destination at Terwijde.

>> Photographic impression of Terwijde in Utrecht/Holland
By: Leonard Henny | 2008/08/04 | Destination:
In the Vinex location of Terwijde, Leidsche Rijn in Utrecht, Aquatecture has made a design for a floating community of 19 houses. There are 5 different types of houses where the variation is mainly dictated by differences in boardwalks and the upper roof structure. Each owner also has the possibility to choose from a palet of different colors and configuration for the facades. Through the use of other designing tools like clustering, rotting and mirroring some of the houses, diversity has been realised with a minimum of differences in houses.

Check out the article "Storm of 9 Bf hinders launching of 10 floathomes in Holland" on the homepage to read more about this project.

>> Property Value Improvement Plan for the Romai Part District
By: Leonard Henny | 2008/03/16 | Destination:
Amphibious Community can provide comfortable housing in the flood-prone area of Római Part.

The yearly floods in the district of Római Part inhibit comfortable living in this otherwise attractive residential area. This area is frequently flooded by the Danube to the extent that residents have to be evacuated twice a year. Presently many of the relatively fancy homes are deserted. Some temporary functions remain, such as seasonal restaurants. Property values in this specific area are at an all time low (about 44.000 HUF per sqm, about € 176,00 per sqm.) In adjacent non-flood-prone areas property values are high for Hungary, since this is a well respected neighbourhood (estimated average value 300.000 HUF per sqm, about € 1.200 per sqm). If the flood-risk area could be developed with amphibious buildings (both homes and neighbourhood-facilities) this area would be immensely improved (and property values could explode).
